Afrojacks DVD Recommendation - Le Samouraï
Le Samouraï, directed by Jean-Pierre Mellville, is possibly one of the finest crime drama/film noir/thriller films ever made. The plot is simple, Jef Costello, a lethal and perfectionist hit man, is hired to kill a nightclub owner which gets messy and soon thereafter he is being chased by both his employers as well as the police. One would think this is enough action for one man but he manages to find some time to have a few ladies fall in love with him and help him out by keeping his chasers off his tail along the way. Them easily falling under his spell is understandable as Costello, played by Alain Delon, is the coolest character to ever be crafted for film. He is like a real life James Bond without the gimmicky weapons and you will immediately see his character and performance’s influence on almost every crime drama/thriller’s main character to this day.
What makes this film one of the best of it’s kind is not only the performances and simple yet entertaining plot but the beauty of 1967 France. The look and feel of that time (women, cars, clothing, style) coupled with a main character you can only admire running around arguably the most beautiful city in the world makes this film is absolutely breath taking and wish you were around to live it. The next time you are looking for a rental and you’re sick of all the same crap that’s out now do not let this one pass by. Le Samouraï is essential viewing if you are a) a man with a working set of balls, b) have a brain thats functional and c) you like crime dramas and film noir of all time periods (if not please see points a and b).
