Afrojacks Top 5 Movies of ‘09

In a year in which animated 3D films dominated the box office and Nazi killin’ never looked like more fun, I’d have to say that 2009 was a kind of double edged sword type of year for films.  On one hand, there were a ton of entertaining, smart and interesting films but on the other, there weren’t too many that stood head and shoulders above the rest as epicly amazing.  Because of this, it’s very difficult to pick a top 5 and it really all comes down to personal preference so I’ve also included my many runner ups (in order of release date) which I also loved and encourage everyone to see.  If you’ve got a better top 5, hit me up in the comments, but here’s my list:

5. Big Fan - One of the most underrated performances of the year by Patton Oswalt in a very dark film about a live at home loser who has nothing left to hold on to but his New York Giants and when that turns on him (in a huge way) what’s left?  Best movie per budget of the year.

4. A Serious Man - A  unique and subtely hysterical comedy full of  Jewish humor that everyone can find entertaining in a neurotic, Larry David way that only the Coen Brothers could pull off without feeling borrowed.

3. Hurt Locker -  An intense thriller about a bomb disposal squad in Baghdad who have the most dangerous job in the world and just want to survive the few days of service they have left.  It’s a definitive war movie (and the best Iraq war movie) with authentic emotions, top notch battle scenes and missing are the typical war time cliches.

2. Fantastic Mr. Fox -  The most fun I’ve had at a movie in 10 years- visually amazing, perfect use of music (unique and licensed), great cast, just the right length, quirky but not pretentious as Wes Anderson so often can be.  A movie that literally everyone can enjoy, ‘nough said.

1. Inglourious Basterds -  My favorite film of ‘09 and by far one of Tarantino’s best work since Reservoir Dogs, great use of gore, gripping and fun from front to the very end (one of the best revenge scenes ever, even if its revenge for crimes committed 60 years ago and he had to re write history to make it happen.

Best Documentary:
Anvil! The Story of Anvil -  The best doc of the year hits all the points: funny (intentionally and unintentionally), sad, pathetic, tragic story, tons of rock, tons of emotion and such a great time (especially if you’re stoned with a sixer and a few friends like we were)

Runners Up:
Adventureland - great depiction of mid 80’s culture without going over the top as you can so easily do with an amazing and authentic soundtrack too boot.
Star Trek -  Fuck Avatar, Star Trek is the best sci fi movie this year and this is coming from a guy who a) could care less about the Star Trek franchise and b) saw this on a freaking plane!  And no, the plane didn’t have an IMAX screen or 3D glasses.
Up - The first 4 mins are absolutely perfect (and perfectly sad), the score is on point and the theme should win for best song (if nominated).  Up is visually gorgeous and an animated masterpiece.  What is going on with our films now where kids animated movies are kicking the absolute shit out of everything else?
In The Loop - The best comedy of the year because it’s smart as hell and completely well written.  If that’s not your thing, then insert the Hangover here.
The Hangover -  A great yet stupid comedy that everyone can laugh at because of Zack Galifanakus.  Take him out and this movie was laaaame.
Food, Inc - The other great documentary of ‘09 (I didn’t see The Cove because I like to kill dolphins) if only for the bloated cow scene… yum.
Gomorrah - A docudrama about mob life in Naples told from different perspectives, none of which make it out to be all that appealing.
Bruno - I haven’t seen a movie theater laugh louder and more often (including myself) for 1.5 hours.  Dare I say better than Borat?
500 Days of Summer - An entertaining and not too sappy rom-com and could make this list for the Hall & Oates dance sequence alone.
District 9 - Second best sci-fi action thriller of the year that thankfully doesn’t follow the typical action/sci fi/thriller cliched equation.
The Baader Meinhof Complex - This actually came out in ‘08 everywhere but the US (and was nominated for best foreign film last year) but we’ll throw it in ‘09 anyway.  It’s about German 70’s era terrorists who hate capitalist scum like us.  A bit long but completely action packed and really solid performances.
Zombieland - Although the zombie and vampire genre is played out to no end, at least this one can laugh at itself and keeps the jokes and gore coming at a furious pace.
The Road -  So very depressing in terms of both content and visuals, a little slow but two amazing performances that really put you in the duct tape and plastic bag wrapped shoes of a man and his boy just trying to get by with nothing in a world left with nothing (plus roaming cannibalistic gangs).
