Billy Corgan – 6 feet 3 inches. Born William Patrick “Billy” Corgan, Jr. on March 17, 1967 is the frontman and sole permanent member of The Smashing Pumpkins. Corgan started playing shows around Chicago, Illinois with guitarist James Iha, and a drum machine. The project quickly gained steam with the recruiting of Jimmy Chamberlin, a successful local jazz / polka drummer. In 3 years, The Smashing Pumpkins had completely transformed themselves into a major label success. Strong album sales and arena rock tours pushed the band to a point, where, in 1997 Jimmy Chamberlin was fired for his involvement in touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin’s fatal drug overdose.

Along with keeping The Smashing Pumpkins alive, Corgan has released a solo album, a collection of poetry, written and produced for bands such as Hole, and also been credited for his work on several movie soundtracks. After touring with several replacement drummers and recording an album with electronic drums and guest drummers, Corgan reformed The Smashing Pumpkins with Chamberlin in 2006. They released an album followed by a mostly sold-out tour and DVD, but Chamberlin departed the band in March 2009, leaving Corgan as the only original member. The Smashing Pumpkins held open auditions for a new drummer in 2009 and after over 1,000 applicants, Mike Byrne was chosen to work on the next installment of Smashing Pumpkins songs, which have already begun being released on the band’s official website free of charge. He maintains a strong grass-roots following and is known to have direct communication with his fans.

Joey Ramone 6 feet 3 inches (May 19, 1951 – April 15, 2001), born as Jeffry Ross Hyman, was a vocalist and songwriter best known for his work in the punk rock group The Ramones. Joey Ramone’s image, voice and tenure as frontman of the Ramones made him a countercultural icon.

The Ramones were an American rock band often regarded as the first punk rock group. Formed in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, in 1974, all of the band members adopted stage names ending with “Ramone”, though none of them were actually related. They performed 2,263 concerts, touring virtually nonstop for 22 years. In 1996, after a tour with the Lollapalooza music festival, the band played their final show and then disbanded. A little more than eight years after the breakup, the band’s three founding members – Joey, guitarist Johnny Ramone, and bassist Dee Dee Ramone died.

The stimulation of respiration through the introduction of tobacco smoke by a rectal tube was first practiced by the North American Indians. In 1745, Richard Mead was among the first Western scholars to recommend tobacco smoke enemas to resuscitate victims of drowning. One of the earliest reports of resuscitation by rectally applied tobacco smoke dates from 1746, when a seemingly drowned woman is reported as being successfully revived after, on the advice of a passing sailor, the stem of the sailor’s pipe was inserted into her rectum and air was blown into the pipe’s bowl through a piece of perforated paper.

To physicians of the time, the appropriate treatment for “apparent death” was warmth and stimulation. For this purpose, artificial respiration and the blowing of smoke into the lungs or the rectum were thought to be interchangeably useful. The smoke enema was considered the most potent method, however, due to the warming and stimulating properties associated with tobacco in the pharmacopoeia of the period.[2] At the turn of the 19th century, tobacco smoke enemas had become an established practice in Western medicine, considered by Humane Societies to be as important as artificial respiration. In the 1780s, the Royal Humane Society installed resuscitation kits, including smoke enemas, at various points along the Thames.

Smoke enemas were also used to treat various other afflictions. An 1827 report in a medical journal tells of a woman treated against constipation with repeated smoke enemas, with little apparent success. According to another report of 1835, tobacco enemas were used successfully to treat cholera “in the stage of collapse”. In 1811, a medical writer noted that “[t]he powers of the Tobacco Enema are so remarkable, that they have arrested the attention of practitioners in a remarkable manner. Of the effects and the method of exhibiting the smoke of Tobacco per anum, much has been written”, providing a list of European publications on the subject

When Dr. Hans-Ulrich Niemitz introduces his paper on the “phantom time hypothesis,” he kindly asks his readers to be patient, benevolent, and open to radically new ideas, because his claims are highly unconventional. This is because his paper is suggesting three difficult-to-believe propositions: 1) Hundreds of years ago, our calendar was polluted with 297 years which never occurred; 2) this is not the year 2010, but rather 1713; and 3) The purveyors of this hypothesis are not crackpots.

The Phantom Time Hypothesis suggests that the early Middle Ages (614-911 A.D.) never happened, but were added to the calendar long ago either by accident, by misinterpretation of documents, or by deliberate falsification by calendar conspirators. This would mean that all artifacts ascribed to those three centuries belong to other periods, and that all events thought to have occurred during that same period occurred at other times, or are outright fabrications.

For those of you really not in the know. The mullet is a hairstyle that is short at the front and sides, and long in the back. Often referred to as “business in the front, party in the back”, the mullet began to appear in popular media in the 1960s and 1970s but did not become generally well-known until the early 1980s.

Earlier today I was listening to some old Yardbirds albums, which reminded me of their awesome cameo in the 1966 British-Italian film Blowup. Blowup tells the story of a photographer’s accidental and incidental involvement with a murder, and one of its iconic scenes features The Yardbirds performing “Stroll On”. On a side note, their appearance in Blowup came after The Who declined and The Velvet Underground were unable to acquire UK work permits.

Anyway, this sparked the idea of creating this countdown. Here’s my top 7.

7. The Yardbirds in The Blowup

6. The Ramones in Rock n Roll High School

When Miss Togar and a group of parents attempt to burn a pile of rock records at Vince Lombardi High School, the students take over the high school, joined by the Ramones, who are made honorary students. When the police are summoned and demand that the students evacuate the building, they do so, which leads to a quite literal explosive finale.

5. Soundgarden performing “Birth Ritual” in Singles

The Singles soundtrack is considered to have helped open the door to the explosive popularity of Seattle grunge in the early 1990s. Steve Huey of Allmusic put it best: “Singles helped crystallize the idea of the ‘Seattle scene’ in the mainstream public’s mind, and it was also one of the first big-selling ’90s movie soundtracks (it went platinum and reached the Top Ten) to feature largely new work from contemporary artists…it’s a milestone in the breakthrough of alternative rock into mainstream popular culture, neatly and effectively packaging the Seattle phenomenon for the wider national consciousness.” The movie features acting cameos by Chris Cornell and Pearl Jam.

4. Burt Bacharach in Austin Powers

Sorry had to throw it in. Personal fave. This narrowly beat out Aersomith in Wayne’s World 2.

3. Cannibal Corpse in Ace Ventura

Excuse me is Greg here? . . . . . Thank You!

2. Digital Underground & Tupac in Nothing But Trouble

The Golden Raspberry Awards, called the Razzies for short, is an annual award ceremony held in Los Angeles to recognize the worst in film. In 1992, Nothing But Trouble was nominated for a Razzie in Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay. But nothing’s bad about this cameo . . .

1. Twisted Sister in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure

Don’t f*ck with Pee Wee. You steal his bike, he’s gonna infiltrate a movie set dressed as a nun, and get his bike back. The getaway scene is action packed, filled with explosions, Godzilla, and most notably Dee Snider and Twisted Sister. Blame it on nostalgia, but it doesnt get better than this which is why I’m ranking this #1.
