New Music Releases - Week of April 13th
MGMT - Congratulations: Say goodbye to Electric Feel and all those poppy Apple-commercial tracks. MGMT has completely gone in a new direction for their sophomore album, topuching on elements of new wave, 60s psych and even a little post-punk. Its a mixed bag of sounds from the last 5 decades, and a far cry from what they do best- write singles. Produced by MGMT and Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, E.A.R., Spectrum), Congratulations features Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, MGMT’s core duo, performing with Matt Asti (bass, backing vocals), Will Berman (drums, backing vocals), and James Richardson (guitar, backing vocals), the band’s live line-up. Congratulations is the successor to MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular, the 2008 debut album. Soulful and complex, Congratulations is a surprising and delightful quantum step forward in MGMT’s ongoing pop revolution.

Cohhed & Cambria - Year of the Black Rainbow: This marks Coheed’s fifth studio album. The album is produced by Atticus Ross (Nine Inch Nails, Jane’s Addiction) and Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Tool). With their help, lead singer Claudio Sanchez ” think(s) it’s definitely our best work to date.” The new album also marks drummer Chris Pennie’s studio debut with the band, who has been playing alongside Sanchez, lead guitarist Travis Stever and bassist Michael Todd since 2007.
Thus far, two tracks have been released: “The Broken” and “Here We Are Juggernaut” (mp3 below)
Coheed & Cambria - Here We Are Juggernaut
The video for The Broken (below) is filled with insane animation based off the 352-page Year of the Black Rainbow novel, penned by the Sanchez and New York Times bestselling author Peter David. Needless to say, im pumped for the album, which releases on 4/13.
Jeff Beck - Emotion and Commotion: Hah, I love Jeff Beck but how come old timers are so bad at naming albums. Anyway, Beck hasnt done a studio album in 7 years, but returns strong with a 64 piece orchestra at his back. Yes, you need legend status before you pull that move.
